Drywall sheet calculator
Estimate drywall sheets from measured wall and ceiling areas, large openings, your panel dimensions and a waste allowance you choose.
Enter measured areas and the panel dimensions and waste allowance you plan to use. This browser tool estimates area coverage, not a cut layout, quote or individualized advice.
Enter values and calculate.
Measure walls and ceilings separately. Subtract large openings you will leave unboarded; small openings may be left in the area estimate. Choose panel dimensions and waste from your own plan. Follow the selected product's instructions and local requirements.
Sources and method
- USG Sheetrock Gypsum Panels Installation Guide (accessed November 3, 2026): measure and total wall and ceiling areas, subtract large openings, and select panel size; its estimator says waste is not included.
- USG Sheetrock Wallboard Estimator (accessed November 3, 2026): product estimator prompts for panel size and states its estimate does not include a waste allowance.
Formula: ceil(((wall area + ceiling area − large unboarded openings) × (1 + waste allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ (panel width × panel length)). The waste allowance is an input, not a product recommendation. This area method does not plan cuts or determine code compliance.
How it works
Measure each wall and ceiling area, subtract large openings you will leave unboarded, then divide by the face area of your chosen panel after applying your own waste allowance. Round up to a whole sheet. This area estimate does not optimize the cutting layout.
Good to know
Quick answer: how many drywall sheets should I plan for?
Add the wall and ceiling areas you will cover, subtract large openings, multiply by 1 plus your chosen waste percentage divided by 100, then divide by the face area of your selected panel and round up. Reviewed November 3, 2026. Actual ordering depends on panel size, room geometry, cuts, damage and installation details.
Which openings should I subtract?
USG's installation guide says to subtract large openings such as doorways and picture windows, while small openings such as electrical boxes and pipe fittings need not be subtracted for its estimating method. Measure the surfaces you actually plan to cover.
Does this tell me the best panel layout or drywall type?
No. It estimates area coverage only. Panel orientation, joint placement, thickness, edge details, fire or moisture requirements and local code depend on the project. Follow product instructions and applicable building requirements.
What waste allowance should I use?
There is no single allowance that fits every room or installer. Enter a value that reflects your layout, cuts and expected damage; USG's estimator notes that its estimate does not include waste.
